Biblical Socialism

I posted a new column entry here as a quick response to Jim Wallis' recent entry on the Huffington Post. It was written in somewhat of a hurry so I am sure it sounds like I am rambling, but my main point was directed at the idea of Christians and the Bible having a direct mandate to deal with poverty, which I consider to be mistaken.

Instead, I believe that effectively dealing with poverty is a secondary implications of understanding the Kingdom of God and having willing hearts, not governmental requirements to force the society to deal with poverty. This should be the true meaning of socialism today.

I read through your column and on the whole I agree. I applaud Wallis' effort to address poverty, but he neglects to point out that the Kingdom of God is beyond normal material resources and needs, and part of Christian mission is to witness as well as provide.

I took a look at Wallis' column and the ensuing comments and it simply confirmed what I was already suspecting, that while leftists may appear to tolerate the Christian left as useful, the ultimate goal is socialism with faith out of the equation. Look at the following reply by a HP regular:

I see Barack as a major transitional figure in the odd transition of mainline American religion toward its gradual demise. He is in a sense a secular Christian in the very best sense, with Niebuhrian nuance and Raucshenbusch insistence on at least some progress. It is all anyone who has watched the anguished decline of mainline Protestantism and experienced the long night of the last four decades could wish for. I also believe his version of faith-based initiatives is revolutionary both for the country and the churches, creating a viable basis for a secular ecumenism -- for abandonment of the laity to mission without the need for labels or Christian identity.

Strip away the fancy language and basically, he is saying that Obama represents the death of strong faith, and that the so-called faith based initiatives will make it even easier to get rid of that pesky Christian identity. So much for the Democratic party being more in line with Christian values. One of the mainsteads of the Dems has declared war on Christianity, in response to a Dem Christian. Makes my blood run cold
