I guess that's true if you think that this is it. You have to believe that there is more to this life to refuse to "live". The living God also loves faith and discipline. I would say that you could not call Him a living God if there is no afterlife AND this life contains trials; in that case He would be A god, because trials are inconsistent with a living God. Who is Jürgen going to worship in an imperfect world?

Dana, I think Moltmann is speaking in terms of people being Christians just in order to avoid hell and prepare for heaven. At least that's what I got from reading him.by Dana Nathan Salsbury - 14 Dec, 2007 - 01:32:11
Interesting. The quote makes him sound like an atheist. If the trials we go through are not for a reward beyond the graveI don't understand his phrase, "no more than a preparation for a life beyond..." IMO, our trials are our daily bread, and full of nutrients. If I look at them any other way, I'm doomed to ascribe to a "Murphy's Law" view of life. I can't afford it, because it leads to mistrust, then sin as I believe that God is not looking after me.
I don't know Moltmann's views from one quote, but he's onto an important topic. Having written a book on Heaven I appreciate its motivation for the believer, but I can also see a breaking point in the person who considers his spiritual authority in heaven (someday) as not worth the fight.
